Saturday Snaps: Joy in the Mourning

April 9, 2011 By Sandra Heska King

Sounds of the mourning dove. Mourning is not forgetting… It is an undoing. Every minute tie has to be untied and something permanent and valuable recovered and assimilated from the dust. ~Margery Allingham Not without hope we suffer and we mourn. ~William Wordsworth Snuggle in God’s arms. When you are hurting, when you feel lonely, […]

Fuel for the Weekend: Seize Today (A Poem)

April 8, 2011 By Sandra Heska King

It’s been a crazy day. Part of which was spent househunting with my son and his fiancee. So I have reached back into the archives for today’s meditation.   Seize Today I will seize today for it is shiny and new sparkling with promise a gift wrapped with possibilities and ribbons of delight. Anticipation. I […]

Through and Through Life: Finding Joy in the Yellow

April 7, 2011 By Sandra Heska King

Morning hangs damp and gray. Like my spirits. Rusted farm bell stands guard on weathered post, bolted with two eyes and a nose. It’s mostly silent these days, its original purpose faded into the past with disuse. Awning ruffle ripples gently, and tree branches sway. Cracked concrete apron has almost swallowed my children’s handprints. The […]

Monday Meditation: Only God

April 4, 2011 By Sandra Heska King

I am wilted this morning. And the feelings. They are bleeding. The tears. They pool and leak. Trickle during praise, during prayer, during the breaking of the bread. I brush them away. Pull hair over cheeks. We’re talking about following the path. His path for us. The path of becoming. But often that path is […]

Sunday Seasoned Sayings: Victor Hugo

April 3, 2011 By Sandra Heska King

Saturday Snaps: Rockin’ Robin

April 2, 2011 By Sandra Heska King

  Sounds of the American Robin.   The robin red breast was designated as the state bird of Michigan by House Concurrent Resolution No. 30, the Senate concurring, on April 8, 1931. Fuel for the Weekend: Pit Stops

April 1, 2011 By Sandra Heska King

Fear-of-God is a school in skilled living–first you learn humility, then you experience glory. ~Proverbs 15:33 (Message) Joseph. Favorite son. Tattletale. Teller of dreams. Full of himself? His brothers had enough. Stripped of his robe. Stripped of his life. Tossed into a cistern. Humbled. What did he think about while he was down there? Sold […]

Through and Through: Shhhhhhh

March 31, 2011 By Sandra Heska King

Be still and know I AM. Know I AM and be still.   Some weeks are more stressful than others. Filled with more interruptions and unpleasant surprises. That yet hold seeds of possibilities. This has been one of those weeks. Shhhhhhh,   The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still. ~Exodus […]

A rainbow in the sky:
So was it when my life began;
So is it now I am a man;
So be it when I shall grow old,
Or let me die!

This is called a sweetheart plant. I bought it at This is called a sweetheart plant. I bought it at a farmers market in Ponte Vedra in Feb 2023. And it hasn’t done a thing except not die. I did repot it a few months back just cuz I thought it might need it. A few days ago I noticed it was sprouting a sprout. And today—10 days after having my aortic valve replaced and the day after having a loop recorder inserted—it has UNFURLED!!! A new heart. 🩷

I grew this from a pineapple top. We repotted it again over the weekend. Still no fruit, though. Our neighbor has a baby growing on a small plant, though. What’s up with that?

(Also, I do not have a green thumb. Currently the only things still living are this, an avocado, and a little Boston fern.)

There was not much to see--except the crane family, some blackbirds, a dove. And it was buggy. And a deer fly bit me on the forearm, and it swelled up, and I still have a 1- x 3-inch reddened area. But then... a pink parade.
