For When You’re Exhausted

February 20, 2012 By Sandra Heska King

I haven’t sat outside for a while, but this morning looks so inviting. I can’t bring myself to put on the pink sweatshirt my mom gave me to wear on my outings. So I go as I am–a sight to behold to behold the sights. The white robe’s in the dryer, so I slip on […]

Still Saturday

January 28, 2012 By Sandra Heska King

Be. Still. Know. I Am. God. ~Psalm 46:10 Taking a break from words on Saturdays. Just to be still and know. I’d love for you to join me. Just link to a photo in a comment below that caused to you breathe deeply or gasp in wonder. A slice of time when you saw Him. I’ll try to–I […]

Learning Christ

November 22, 2011 By Sandra Heska King

The glider recognizes me this morning. I’ve spent a lot of time in it over these last weeks. I pull it out to the middle of the room so I can see out over the bay. I pick up this book and page through it, pause to savor words. And my heart stops on this […]

Sunday Seasoned Sayings: Live Light

November 13, 2011 By Sandra Heska King

Live light. Live free. Nestled in His strength. Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. […]

Five-Minute Friday: Putting on the Brakes

November 11, 2011 By Sandra Heska King

Five minutes. Unscripted. Unedited. On unexpected. GO! Here I sit at the Dodge dealership watching televised observances from Arlington. I stopped on the way back to the Cottage for an overdue oil change. I didn’t expect to be here that long. Usually I’m in and out. But today is Veteran’s Day, and they are busy. […]

Drink it Up

October 31, 2011 By Sandra Heska King

How many times have I traveled this road as it bends and curves? Enough lately so I dare to look around and let the Journey carry me. It strains to climb. Carmine and golden hills surround me. This is ski country after all. My dad says this road was once an Indian trail that led […]

Rest and Refresh

October 27, 2011 By Sandra Heska King

We spent a couple of nights in the Days Inn. And then early morning hours in a small hospital waiting room lit by Coke and candy machines. That was the night my mom’s blood pressure was whack. My sister swiped a couple pillows off a stretcher in a hallway and cleaned them with her always-present […]

Monday Meditation: Baggage Drop–Baggage Claim

September 27, 2011 By Sandra Heska King

I leave with more weight than I came with. Not just because of all the great food they served at the ACFW Conference in St. Louis, but also because of all the free books and those I bought after I resolved not to. I’ve already paid for the airline to relieve me of my baggage, but now […]

He Gives Rest

September 2, 2011 By Sandra Heska King

Writing bold for Lisa Jo. Five minutes flat. Unedited. GO! I loved my hummingbird feeder. The glass one painted with yellow sunflowers. It shattered in the sink. I bled. I bought a new one with perches. Where the birds can rest from their frantic flutter as they feed. I think they like it better. To […]

God in the Yard: The End~Hospitality

May 31, 2011 By Sandra Heska King

Embrace the life you have before it’s gone. ~L.L. Barkat Please, God, let my parents come and beat her up. We’d had a sword battle with pencils, Penny and I. And Mrs. Smith rapped my 7-year-old knuckles. But not Penny’s. So I turned around and scribbled on Penny’s picture. And now I stood in the […]

A rainbow in the sky:
So was it when my life began;
So is it now I am a man;
So be it when I shall grow old,
Or let me die!

And I could wish my days to be
Bound each to each by natural piety.” ~ William Wordsworth in “My Heart Leaps Up”

This is called a sweetheart plant. I bought it at This is called a sweetheart plant. I bought it at a farmers market in Ponte Vedra in Feb 2023. And it hasn’t done a thing except not die. I did repot it a few months back just cuz I thought it might need it. A few days ago I noticed it was sprouting a sprout. And today—10 days after having my aortic valve replaced and the day after having a loop recorder inserted—it has UNFURLED!!! A new heart. 🩷

I grew this from a pineapple top. We repotted it again over the weekend. Still no fruit, though. Our neighbor has a baby growing on a small plant, though. What’s up with that?

(Also, I do not have a green thumb. Currently the only things still living are this, an avocado, and a little Boston fern.)

There was not much to see--except the crane family, some blackbirds, a dove. And it was buggy. And a deer fly bit me on the forearm, and it swelled up, and I still have a 1- x 3-inch reddened area. But then... a pink parade.
