Staying in the Center

March 19, 2012 By Sandra Heska King

“What is THAT? STOP!” He jerks to a stop right there in the road. I fumble for my camera while I keep my focus on Lake Abby. I snap a couple of pictures of the black and white bird that floats in the center. We have no idea what it is. Pastor talks about the […]

Scripture Sunday: On the Line

March 18, 2012 By Sandra Heska King

I pray to God—my life a prayer— and wait for what he’ll say and do. My life’s on the line before God, my Lord, waiting and watching till morning, waiting and watching till morning. ~Psalm 130:5-6 (Message)

Still Saturday: A Gift From the Sea

March 17, 2012 By Sandra Heska King

The sea does not reward those who are too anxious, too greedy, or too impatient. One should lie empty, open, choiceless as a beach–waiting for a gift from the sea. ~Ann Morrow Lindbergh I  did not take this photo. It came to me via a text from my dear friend, Melinda Ysaguirre, AKA @JOYFULLTOO.”Thinking of you […]

In Which I’m Tired and Discouraged

March 13, 2012 By Sandra Heska King

“Nama! I wanna ge’ up!” I sigh and roll over. It’s not 4 a.m. like it was yesterday, but it’s still dark. And there will be no quiet time again this morning. I feel around on the bed for my robe, swing legs over side, and scuff the floor until my toes find slippers. I […]

Having Fun in the Sanctuary

March 12, 2012 By Sandra Heska King

Here I am to worship. Here I am to bow down. Here I am to re-member. The praise team begins to sing. And mini beach balls and bean bags and frisbees sail through the air. In the sanctuary.   And people sing and laugh. And. Have. Fun. In the sanctuary. “Because,” he says, “Christians don’t […]

Scripture Sunday: Blossom

March 11, 2012 By Sandra Heska King

Still Saturday: Moon Marvel

March 10, 2012 By Sandra Heska King

I look up at your macro-skies, dark and enormous, your handmade sky-jewelry, Moon and stars mounted in their settings. Then I look at my micro-self and wonder, Why do you bother with us? Why take a second look our way? ~Psalm 8:3-4 (Message) The brightness woke me the other night, so I rose to take […]

Spilling the Filling

March 9, 2012 By Sandra Heska King

  Snow dusts the field, the driveway, the roof. A robin shivers in the pregnant branches. Feathers ruffle in the bitter wind. The feeders are empty, so I don my jacket and boots, scoop black oil to refill. I purposely spill some for the ground-feeders and for the love of sunflowers. I come in and […]

To Greet the God in Me

March 7, 2012 By Sandra Heska King

Within the fence I limp searching for my soul past faded cones and seeds still clinging to the tree past algaed walls and rubbled piles of loss and buried dreams a grendeled past of fear and shame. And though I wear the helmet of a king and carry a sharp sword I look for just one […]

When You Wait for Love…And Wait…And Wait…

March 6, 2012 By Sandra Heska King

. . . and your heart aches like the hollow of your hungry stomach. At least like your stomach used to feel. Because now something called Compassion has opened a program near your home. There’s food there. And you can go to school and learn to read and write. And you can learn about how […]

A rainbow in the sky:
So was it when my life began;
So is it now I am a man;
So be it when I shall grow old,
Or let me die!
The Child is father of the Man;
And I could wish my days to be
Bound each to each by natural piety.” ~ William Wordsworth in “My Heart Leaps Up”

This is called a sweetheart plant. I bought it at This is called a sweetheart plant. I bought it at a farmers market in Ponte Vedra in Feb 2023. And it hasn’t done a thing except not die. I did repot it a few months back just cuz I thought it might need it. A few days ago I noticed it was sprouting a sprout. And today—10 days after having my aortic valve replaced and the day after having a loop recorder inserted—it has UNFURLED!!! A new heart. 🩷

I grew this from a pineapple top. We repotted it again over the weekend. Still no fruit, though. Our neighbor has a baby growing on a small plant, though. What’s up with that?

(Also, I do not have a green thumb. Currently the only things still living are this, an avocado, and a little Boston fern.)

There was not much to see--except the crane family, some blackbirds, a dove. And it was buggy. And a deer fly bit me on the forearm, and it swelled up, and I still have a 1- x 3-inch reddened area. But then... a pink parade.
