Sunrise at Laity Lodge
“It is a moment of light surrounded on all sides by darkness and oblivion. In the entire history of the universe, let alone in your own history, there has never been another just like it and there will never be another just like it again. It is the point to which all your yesterdays have been leading since the hour of your birth. It is the point from which all your tomorrows will proceed until the hour of your death. If you were aware of how precious it is, you could hardly live through it. Unless you are aware of how precious it is, you can hardly be said to be living at all.
“This is the day which the Lord has made, says the 118th Psalm. “Let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Or weep and be sad in it for that matter. The point is to see it for what it is because it will be gone before you know it. If you waste it, it is your life that you’re wasting. If you look the other way, it may be the moment you’ve been waiting for always that you’re missing.
“All other days have either disappeared into darkness and oblivion or not yet emerged from them. Today is the only day there is.”
Listening to Your Life: Daily Meditations with Frederick Buechner
Welcome to Still Saturday where we pause after a busy week, move in quiet pilgrimage, maybe linger a while in some still place, and soak in the beauty of images and words. We’d love for you to join us. Get the details above, grab your favorite button, and link up below. We all love to hear if something especially speaks to your heart, but please don’t feel pressured to comment. Simply take some time to gaze long and drink deep.
Oh, yes. I echo these words. For we only have one life to live on this earth and it is only ours to live.
Blessings friend. I’ve missed your place.
So good to see your sweet face. I hope you rested well.
Being here.with you.now.
Love being here. with you. now.
A beautiful reminder to be here, right now–this is the day! thanks for this breath of fresh air, Sandy. Blessings to you this lovely weekend.
And to you, Kris.
Yes, I needed this today . . . thanks, Sandy!
🙂
Thanks Sandy…just found you guys…and glad I did. Everyday is another to shine His hope and love. Wishing you a beautiful Saturday out there.
So glad you’re joining us, Nikki. A beautiful Saturday to you, too.
What an awesome reminder as we head into a time that can be so frantic. This is the day.
I hadn’t thought about that, Jen. How we’re heading into frantic. But you’re right. We’ll need extra doses of stillness.
Oh yes … to focus on the gift of today … to give up looking longingly at the past or being overly absorbed in what’s around the bend.
Thank you!
Chuck Swindoll talked about that today in his devotional.
Forget the Past.
What a wonderful quote for the now.
A good quote for every moment.
So very good…
Oh thank you, Sandra. So needed this today, friend.
This is so lovely Sandy. More and more thoughts like these invade my heart and call me to live each moment aware of how very precious they are.
Oh. Words right to my heart at the end of this long week. Bless you, Sandra.
And thank you for hosting.
This is so beautiful & so true, Sandy! Today will never come again, so may we be good stewards of every today He grants us. Thanks for the great post & for hosting, & God bless!
Beautiful photo and meditation. We have to encourage one another while its still called Today and not harden our hearts to His voice. Amen. Thanks Sandra.
Lovely photo and quote Sandra.
Thank you for this quote, Sandy. I love Buechner, but don’t recall having read it. It reminds me a little of this quote by Annie Dillard: “How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.” Our days and therefore our lives are …. what does the Bible say?…. mists, shadows, fading grass, threescore years and ten–at best fourscore? I know there is more imagery scatterred throughout Scripture, if we can even bear to read it. The reminder is powerful and poignant. Oh, that I would remember this always, each and every day–this one day, which may be my only day for all I know. I love that you spend your days ministering in meaningful words to hungering hearts. You make your days count for the Kingdom.
Fondly,
Lynn
LOVE this quote. Time to dig out the Buechner again, I think. I do so enjoy his work.
Seeing each day for what it is . . yes and amen. Hope you have a good weekend Sandy.
