To the One Who Heals

August 29, 2011 By Sandra Heska King

My shoe covers rustle along the linoleum floor until I come to the holding area. I find her, eyes closed on the gurney, brown wisps around green paper cap. A tiny lady almost swallowed by crisp white and warm woven. I pick up the chart at the foot of the bed and page through it. […]

Saturday Snaps: A Peek at a Piping Plover

August 27, 2011 By Sandra Heska King

  We’ve just come back from the Au Sable Light Station near Grand Marais, and the grandgirl and I are hiked out. She just wants to crash in the cabin with her Littlest Pet Shop critters and her case of plastic fish. I just want to make some coffee, put up my feet, and eye my slice […]

Walking Wooden

August 24, 2011 By Sandra Heska King

They’re at it again, these two. Claire and L.L. Asking us to stretch our “creative fibers.” To share our history symbolically. In photographic images. And poetry–a sonnet. Claire challenges us to find five photos that answer five specific questions. I didn’t realize how much my life has been shaped by wood. 1. Who Made Up Your […]

Textures of Text: It’s a Mystery

August 23, 2011 By Sandra Heska King

All mystery feels like fog. It presents hiddenness. It demands strong faith to walk into it believing that one day it will be demystified. ~Luci Shaw It’s a mystery this hunger for the hidden, the faulty that aches for the faultless, the flawed that yearns for the flawless, how the best havings are in the […]

God Moments with G-Ma and Grace: The Soo Locks

August 22, 2011 By Sandra Heska King

It’s time to go home. But Grace saw a movie at school on the Soo Locks. She wants to see them up close and personal. And go through them. The scenery assaults me. We’ve come from peaceful and pristine to chaos and clutter. Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan side. A place of barges and docks and […]

God Moments with G-Ma and Grace: Around Grand Marais and the Au Sable Light Station

August 19, 2011 By Sandra Heska King

Dennis and Grace are still asleep when I hike down to the beach. On the way, I see my first cedar waxwing. The beach is deserted, and I am alone with the sand and sky and water.   We promised Grace a lazy day with no hiking. But then we tell her of another falls […]

A rainbow in the sky:
So was it when my life began;
So is it now I am a man;
So be it when I shall grow old,
Or let me die!

And I could wish my days to be
Bound each to each by natural piety.” ~ William Wordsworth in “My Heart Leaps Up”

This is called a sweetheart plant. I bought it at This is called a sweetheart plant. I bought it at a farmers market in Ponte Vedra in Feb 2023. And it hasn’t done a thing except not die. I did repot it a few months back just cuz I thought it might need it. A few days ago I noticed it was sprouting a sprout. And today—10 days after having my aortic valve replaced and the day after having a loop recorder inserted—it has UNFURLED!!! A new heart. 🩷

I grew this from a pineapple top. We repotted it again over the weekend. Still no fruit, though. Our neighbor has a baby growing on a small plant, though. What’s up with that?

(Also, I do not have a green thumb. Currently the only things still living are this, an avocado, and a little Boston fern.)

There was not much to see--except the crane family, some blackbirds, a dove. And it was buggy. And a deer fly bit me on the forearm, and it swelled up, and I still have a 1- x 3-inch reddened area. But then... a pink parade.
