31 Days of Moving Reflections – Day 31 #SouthFloridaBound #TheBrokenWay

November 1, 2016 By Sandra Heska King

Monday, October 31 They countered. We accepted. To close two weeks before Christmas. Or sooner. Maybe. Who thought on Day 1 of this series that we’d have a contract on Day 31? Now we’re having second thoughts. But I’m remembering yesterday’s tears… and that anyway it’s not the place where we ultimately end up but […]

31 Days of Moving Reflections – Day 27 #SouthFloridaBound

November 1, 2016 By Sandra Heska King

Thursday, October 27   We’re learning to live with less. From a three-floor family farmhouse, to a one-bedroom (king) condo, two baths, kitchen, living area and screened balcony… to a queen studio cottage with an eat-in kitchen. And when you burn the rolls and set off the smoke alarm, it’s helpful to have a […]

31 Days of Moving Reflections – Day 22 #SouthFloridaBound

October 22, 2016 By Sandra Heska King

Saturday, October 22 Ten of us wake up in our son’s perfect-for-four apartment, D and I on an air mattress crammed in the playroom. (Later tonight D will lose his balance on too little air when he rises to visit the restroom, tumble back into bed, then to the floor and set a […]

31 Days of Moving Reflections – Day 21 #SouthFloridaBound

October 21, 2016 By Sandra Heska King

Friday, October 21 Today we’re facing down danger in Florida– not alligators nor sharks nor fireants nor mosquitoes nor Nile crocodiles nor Burmese pythons. Today we’re going to get our kicks not on Route 66 but on what many deem to be the most deadly or at least second deadly stretch of highway in the country, Interstate 95 heading […]

31 Days of Moving Reflections – Day 19 #SouthFloridaBound

October 19, 2016 By Sandra Heska King

Wednesday, October 19 Suds quiver like jello on the edge. A grain of sanderlings skitters along the water, and one seems to surf a wave. A pair of gulls gaze out at who knows what. An older couple about my age, with rolls exposed, strolls past, she in a two-piece and he in a Speedo, both dark-tanned and […]

31 Days of Moving Reflections – Day 16 #SouthFloridaBound

October 19, 2016 By Sandra Heska King

Sunday, October 16 It’s disorienting to be a people who walk in darkness so others can see the right light.   At first I was confused and nervous about having to walk back to our car in the dark after dinner on the pier. And then I remembered the signs. It’s sea turtle nesting season. From […]

31 Days of Moving Reflections – Day 13 #SouthFloridaBound

October 17, 2016 By Sandra Heska King

Thursday, October 13 Today I’m lying awake helping the morning, a thousand mornings. I’m crossing the waters into rhythms of rest and the joy of poetry, poetry at work in me. I’m discovering hope. even if nobody speaks of remarkable things, and I’m finding livelihood in this adventure of ascent along the broken way. […]

31 Days of Moving Reflections – Day 12 #SouthFloridaBound

October 16, 2016 By Sandra Heska King

Wednesday, October 12 Today I’m stepping out with my best friend. Siri, where’s the nearest nail salon? Oh, good. I noticed your nails were getting sharp. Siri can be a little sharp herself. But we go exploring, and I get clipped, salted, scrubbed, and lotioned. At Publix I help a man find the cottage cheese. He’s on his […]

Spent a couple hours this morning with friends fro Spent a couple hours this morning with friends from @spanishriverchurch picking up beach trash. Little bits of colored and clear plastic, big bits of plastic, bottle caps, broken glass, strings, ropes, straws, socks, fast food containers, paper, cigarette holders and filters—and a couple unmentionables. Took extra care around the turtle nests. Last count was about 70 pounds, but there were also some bigger things like an abandoned chair and a plastic tent. And a big piece of burlap or something with a fishing lure and giant hook attached. D found a Macy’s gift card that he almost tossed in his bucket. But we brought it home to check the balance—$24.60! We should be able to turn that into something useful for someone. 😊

When I stepped out to release it (no bail), I was surprised by this brief bit of backyard beauty.
For most of us, knowledge of our world comes large For most of us, knowledge of our world comes largely through sight, yet we look about with such unseeing eyes that we are partially blind. One way to open your eyes to unnoticed beauty is to ask yourself, "What if I had never seen this before? What if I knew I would never see it again?" ~ Rachel Carson in The Sense of Wonder

A tale of two iguanas... I did not see the iguana A tale of two iguanas... I did not see the iguana in the background until I downloaded the photos. That, I believe, is the one that got caught in one of the openings in the neighbor's chain link fence. We tried in several (safe) ways to dislodge it without luck and could think of no other option but to leave it. Somehow it apparently dislodged itself. We also believe this is the pair that was getting into another neighbor's garden. We haven't seen either one since the last cold snap, so we are wondering if they survived.
🌱
Thinking some may have tumbled from their perches last night. Pretty sure it will be raining iguanas tonight since we are under a frost advisory. It's cold. And windy.
