Saturday’s Health Snippet: One Way to Drop Some Weight

January 14, 2012 By Sandra Heska King

One way to drop some weight is . . .

to drop some weight.

When we’re overwhelmed with stuff . . .

we tend to stuff.

At least I do.

If my surroundings are out of order, my eating is out of order.

I don’t have the energy to eat in a way that provides energy.

I eat what’s fast and what’s easy.

And too much of it.

Or I make my husband take me out.

I don’t take time to buy and prepare healthy meals and snacks.

It’s too overwhelming.

So I’m finding that one way to drop some weight is to drop some weight.

And I’m not talking diet.

I’m talking declutter.

Do you need to establish (or re-establish) order?

Start with the kitchen. Clear everything off the counter that you can. Dump all the tools you don’t use. Clean out the cupboards and the fridge. Trash all the undated foods. Don’t use the table for a dumping ground.

Then make a grocery run and fill your cart with healthy foods.

Splurge on a bouquet of fresh flowers while you’re there.

Come home and whip up something(s) good.

And watch the weight drop.

I did some reorganizing this morning, in my kitchen. It’s a season, isn’t it?

    Excellent advice, Sandy. Thank you.

I was just reading a label on a “snack” and it had absolutely 0 food value. Into the garbage!!!!

Great idea! My husband made an extra effort at lunch today to really clear the counter completely. It made dinner preparations so easy. And I made a really healthy fish dish.

I’m trying to be careful. I’ve lost a fair amount of wt in the last couple years. Now, addictively, I weight myself every morning. If I gained wt, I would drink piles of water and, other than a few very basic needs, wouldn’t eat until the pound dropped. Sounds crazy, but it’s working for me. At my age, it takes too long to drop some if there’s a need to do so. AND, just as Susie mentioned on hers, I look at the nutrition part and if it’s not healthy, I toss it away. Being pickier and pickier. Worth the constant attention. [doesn’t mean that I never eat ice cream and chocolate! I may be working harder to watch my nutrition, but I’m not crazy!!]

Spent a couple hours this morning with friends fro Spent a couple hours this morning with friends from @spanishriverchurch picking up beach trash. Little bits of colored and clear plastic, big bits of plastic, bottle caps, broken glass, strings, ropes, straws, socks, fast food containers, paper, cigarette holders and filters—and a couple unmentionables. Took extra care around the turtle nests. Last count was about 70 pounds, but there were also some bigger things like an abandoned chair and a plastic tent. And a big piece of burlap or something with a fishing lure and giant hook attached. D found a Macy’s gift card that he almost tossed in his bucket. But we brought it home to check the balance—$24.60! We should be able to turn that into something useful for someone. 😊

When I stepped out to release it (no bail), I was surprised by this brief bit of backyard beauty.

A tale of two iguanas... I did not see the iguana A tale of two iguanas... I did not see the iguana in the background until I downloaded the photos. That, I believe, is the one that got caught in one of the openings in the neighbor's chain link fence. We tried in several (safe) ways to dislodge it without luck and could think of no other option but to leave it. Somehow it apparently dislodged itself. We also believe this is the pair that was getting into another neighbor's garden. We haven't seen either one since the last cold snap, so we are wondering if they survived.

Thinking some may have tumbled from their perches last night. Pretty sure it will be raining iguanas tonight since we are under a frost advisory. It's cold. And windy.
